When not to build custom software

A written list of jobs ZynVoss LLC will not quote. If your project is on this list, buy a product. Do not hire us to reinvent it.

Updated 2026-09-10. Written by Christopher Gilliland, founder of ZynVoss LLC — Fort Pierce, FL. Not legal, tax, or investment advice.

Most software-company sites will not publish this page. They want every inbound email to become a statement of work. We do not. Custom software is expensive because the exceptions are expensive. If a product already owns the exceptions, you should pay that product a monthly fee and keep your cash for the loop nobody else will copy.

01

Buy these. Do not build them.

  • Email. Gmail, Microsoft 365, or Fastmail. A custom inbox is a decade of spam, mobile clients, and lawyers.
  • Payroll and tax withholding. Gusto, ADP, Paychex. We are not your payroll company.
  • Generic CRM if HubSpot, Jobber, or ServiceTitan already fits. If your writers live in Jobber and it does not hurt, keep it. Integrate. Do not start a second CRM because someone is mad at a report.
  • Accounting. QuickBooks, Xero, or your CPA’s stack. We will export. We will not become a second general ledger.
  • Card storage. Stripe Checkout. We are a Stripe merchant. We do not store PAN. We are not a PCI assessor.
  • A marketplace “like Uber” with no density, no insurance, and no scope. That is a speech, not a v1.
  • A consumer social network. Moderation, abuse, and app-store rules will eat a Florida LLC.
  • Something you need by Friday that also needs HIPAA, FedRAMP, or a bank charter. We do not sell certifications we have not earned.
02

Build these, if the daily loop is yours

Quote rules your SaaS will not copy. Dispatch that matches how your crews actually roll. A portal your customers already log into because you told them to. Intake that hits the board without a human retyping it. The Monday report the owner currently builds from three spreadsheets and a group text.

That is custom. It is also how we stay in business from 6515 Spanish Lakes Blvd without lying about “AI transformation.”

03

How we decide on a first call

Bring the painful loop in one paragraph. Name the tools you already pay for. Name the Monday exception. If the loop is “send invoices and pay people,” we will tell you to stay in QuickBooks and Gusto. If the loop is “estimate, inspect, invoice, and the customer is also a vendor on Saturdays,” that is ours. Numbers live in the 2026 cost guide. The decision frame is in build vs buy.

04

What “no” sounds like

We say no on the phone. We put it in email. We do not take a deposit to “explore” a product we already know you should buy. If we already started discovery and the answer becomes buy, you still pay for the hours that already happened. You do not pay us to write a clone of Gmail.

Florida specifics

Treasure Coast shops call when a storm week wrecks the phone tree. That is an after-hours and intake problem — see after-hours AI — not a reason to rebuild payroll. Independent auto shops should read shop software before they pay anyone for a “custom RO system” that is actually a skin on a spreadsheet.
